
It’s a well-worn theme in all of the blogs, online expat newspapers and forums: new electronics – computers, laptops, iPhones, stereos, TVs, games consoles, cameras and so on – are very expensive here in Argentina. The problem, of course, is the import duties that the government sees fit to impose.
If you want to get your hands on some sweet electronics, and you don’t want to pay the insane prices at your local Garbarino, you have a couple of options. Getting a friend who’s going back to the States to buy what you want there and courier it back to you is definitely the best, but when that’s just not possible it’s time to do what the locals do and log on to MercadoLibre .

If you’ve ever been to San Telmo on a Sunday (and let’s face it, we all have), you would have seen market stalls selling antique seltzer siphon bottles. These beautiful old bottles display the history of Argentina’s love affair with seltzer.
And it’s a history that continues to be written. In Buenos Aires, bottles of seltzer in siphon bottles, now made from plastic, are still delivered to peoples’ doors, much like the way that milk used to be delivered in the United States and elsewhere.

Everyone loves dogs. And why not? We’ve selectively (but mostly unintentionally) bred them to be the perfect companions over a period of at least 15,000 years. Dogs are always happy to see you, they make great surrogate children, and if you’re a single man they’re a fantastic way to meet chicks (chicas too). What’s not to love?
There is, however, a darker side to doggy ownership. Owning a dog can seriously restrict your movements. Going away for a week or even a weekend isn’t so easy when you have a canine in your life, and moving countries can seem impossible.
